“Being You”

Many have asked me
Even some just this day
How I can be you
When you are away
 
I thought and I pondered
Just how this could be
How I could be you
When I am still me
 
I ask questions and watch
The things that you do
So when you’re away
They can still look like you
 
I go through your kitchen
Like I would my own
Finding just what I need
Making myself at home
 
I look at each room
Seeing just how you “do it”
Then I set myself down
And just go right to it
 
I put on your apron,
Your gloves and your hat
I do not forget
That you have a cat
 
Cooking the food,
Answering the phone,
Greeting the guests
As if they were my own
 
Remembering just how
You would do it today
So I can be you
When you are away
